GitHub Copilot adds Kimi K2.7 Code as its first open-weight model option
Moonshot AI's Kimi K2.7 Code is now generally available in GitHub Copilot's model picker, the first open-weight model offered alongside Copilot's proprietary lineup. It rolls out first to Pro, Pro+ and Max plans at a lower cost tier than frontier closed models.
GitHub has made Kimi K2.7 Code, an open-weight coding model from Beijing-based Moonshot AI, generally available as a selectable option in Copilot, marking the first time an open-weight model has joined Copilot's model picker alongside the proprietary lineup from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google.
- Mixture-of-experts architecture: 1 trillion total parameters, 32 billion active per token
- Hosted by GitHub on Microsoft Azure, billed at provider list pricing, a lower cost tier than frontier proprietary models in Copilot
- Rolling out first to Copilot Pro, Pro+ and Max; Business and Enterprise come in following weeks
- Off by default for Business and Enterprise, admins must enable it via a Copilot policy setting
- Available in VS Code 1.127+, Visual Studio 17.14.6+, JetBrains, Xcode, Eclipse, Copilot CLI and github.com
Because full weights are publicly downloadable, the model can also be audited or self-hosted outside Copilot, a distinction GitHub is flagging directly to enterprise admins alongside the usual security and compliance review guidance for open-weight models.
